The sequence of events of the past few days:
Friday: 5:30pm - Drove down to Yale with some of the AAB brothers. Got caught in heavy traffic along the way, but Shaw got us to New Haven in a reasonable time. Stopped at Best Western, where many of the brothers (but not me) were staying for the night.
9:00pm - Had dinner at Denny's with the brothers. Realized that Denny's has some fruity names on its menu, like Cherry Pucker, or some shit like that. Filled up on food to prepare for the booze later.
10:30pm - Got dropped off at Yale's campus. Met up with a bunch of Harvard people and a couple of Yalies. The night begins.
11:30pm - After a round of Kings and some well-deserved pizza, went to a couple Yale dorm parties. They were more like lounge parties than dance parties, but we got to look at some Yale dorms, and they're not too shabby. Filled up with alcohol, to keep warm of course (it was actually freezing outside).
Saturday 2:00am - Went to The Takeover. By that time, two of the three dance floors had been closed, and only the after-hours basement was open. The music was a bit too techno-ish, and the people there were sketchy to the max. It appeared that the club owners had opened the club to the general public, which meant that there were dirty older New Haven guys there. Good thing I'm a dude, or I would have had my ass violated.
4:00am - Went back to Yale campus to crash. Ended up sleeping on a sofa in a sitting-up position for the entire night. It was actually the best sleep I had gotten the whole week. Sad, huh?
9:00am - Woke up well-rested and set out to the tailgates.
11:00am - Finally made it to the tailgates. The Harvard tailgates were better this year than any of the other years I've been to The Game. Good food, good alcohol, great music. Saw a ton of people (most of whom were trashed). Saw one Harvard guy get arrested, probably for indecent behavior.
2:00pm - Decided to head over to the actual football game, hoping that it wouldn't be over already (it started at 12:30pm). But when we got there, halftime had just ended. Harvard was down 14-3.
5:00pm - Harvard wins 30-24 over Yale! At some point in the third quarter, Harvard was down 21-3. We went on a 27-to-3 run! That's fucking amazing. Highlights of the game: while explaining the rules of football to a friend, she asks, "So how many quarters are there?" Yup, we made it into Harvard. =) Lowlights of the game: both the Harvard and Yale teams sucked in terms of play, but Harvard just sucked a bit less.
6:00pm - Met up with the rest of the AAB brothers to head home. Realized just how lucky I was that we had rented a van instead of taking the UC shuttles because of the confusion with the buses and the crazy traffic in New Haven.
8:30pm - Made it back to Harvard in one piece, thanks to the crazy driving of Maurice. Went out for pizza with Elissa. Talked about stuff. Lots of stuff. Elissa, you're awesome.
10:30pm - Decided on a whim to go to an 80's party thrown by MIT's ZBT. This was probably the most hilarious part of my night. Will, Jack, some of Jack's friends, and I somehow came to the conclusion that this party was going to be awesome (in a hilarious sense). So we donned 80's gear and caught a cab to the party. It turned out to be a lot of fun, since we couldn't stop laughing the entire evening about how lame the party was. There were a lot of people there, but eveyone was dancing and singing to cheesy 80's music. If you can't beat em', join em', so we boogied with one hand holding a beer and the other raised up high. All I can say is, HILARIOUS.
Sunday 2:00am - Ended the evening at the Kong. Sat next to a huge group of Sigma Chi alumni, who felt that they needed to sing the entire American Pie song. Since four of the six people in my group had been to CTY, we decided to sing along. Fun times were had by all.
What I learned this weekend: I don't need to drink a lot to have a good time. I actually knew this all along, but just didn't really know how to stop myself once I started drinking. This weekend, I really worked on reaching and maintaining a nice buzz but stopping once I got there. I realized just how simple and effective it is. It saves money on alcohol, keeps me from getting trashed, and allows me to continue having a good time into the wee hours of the night.
What to look forward to: I've entered into uncharted territory on several accounts. It will be interesting to see how certain things pan out in the next several weeks. The Ultimate team's holiday party is coming up, which is always a lot of fun. Interviews are coming along well, and I have a bunch lined up in the next couple of months. I'm waiting to hear back from schools, and crossing my fingers on acceptances. More on all of these things later. But looking to the near future, I'm really looking forward to going home for Thanksgiving, to see my parents and my brother, whom I miss a lot. I'm also looking forward to seeing friends and just having a good time overall. |
